2004 Bear Hunting Wrap-Up |
|
|
Dear Hunter, 2004 marked our 25th year in the guiding business. We started guiding deer hunters in 1979 and then expanded to bear hunters in 1981 after apprenticing a year with Gordie Swenson out of Elephant Lake. Since that time we've had many successful hunts, some unsuccessful hunts, but every one has been memorable! One of our favorite hunting groups includes Brian from Inver Grove Heights who is also one of our longest running hunters. He's hunted with us 10 times and harvested 8 bears. Al from Inver Grove Hgts. has hunted with us the last 6 years and has filled his tag every year with the average bear weighing 206#. And the last member of the group is Tom from St. Paul who has been coming for the last 4 years and has yet to fill his tag. Not that opportunity hasn't presented itself, but Tom is more into the hunt than the kill. He's seen some bear, but some have been sows with cubs (a definite no-no), he's also passed on dry sows and some small boars. This guy can definitely identify male from female before taking that shot! Tom will be hunting with us again in 2005 and we're looking forward to getting that tag used up this year. Another great hunting group that we always "look up to" are the guys from Worthington. John started hunting with us in 1991 and over the years we have had the pleasure of meeting most of his family including getting to hunt with his 5 sons (John, Mark, Dan, David and Chad). We look forward to the day when grandson Cody is old enough to come bear hunting. We wish it was possible to include everyone who has hunted with us in this letter, and although that won't be possible, just know that we think of each of you every year around hunting season! Big bear honors for 2004 go to Mike M. from Woodstock for his 325# dressed male. While yet again this year our Maplewood hunters (Tim, Josh & Jared) went 3 for 3. Ron from Wisconsin took his first bear after patiently waiting for 4 years. Both Cecil and Dave L. headed back to the cities with their tags filled and first time bear hunter Jason R. took his first bear with us. Great going guys and congrats! As you know by all the familiar faces you see in camp we have around a 90% repeat business. One new hunter commented that he thought someone must have died because he'd been trying to get in for 3 years! Don't forget to check out our website and see if your picture made the "shooters gallery". Also you can access the Minn. DNR for your bear application from our site or go to www.dnr.state.mn.us or call the info line at (651) 296-6157 or (888)MINNDNR. We will be having a cook-out at the clubhouse cooler building the night before bear season opens on Wed. August 31st. It's a time for all old friends to get together and the new people to meet the guides and make some new friends. We still have a couple openings for our whitetail hunts (November 5th) at a cost of $1500.00 for a 5 day hunt. This includes lodging. We thank all of our past and present clients for some terrific times and unbelievable stories! Looking forward to another great year! |
